For many years I was a solicitor working in Central London. I have over 25 years’ experience of running professional services businesses and witnessing first-hand the struggles people can have with their mental health, both in the workplace and also in their personal lives.
My own mental health struggles and subsequent recovery, with the help of cognitive behavioural therapy, led me to conclude that I wanted to use my experiences to help others. I had already undergone training as a leadership coach but I broadened my horizons considerably by training as a therapist with the College of Cognitive Behavioural Therapies in London.
I am now a fully qualified Rational Emotive Behaviour and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. I have also undergone separate training in Eye Movement De-sensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).
I aim to work with you to help you understand why you are feeling and acting the way that you do and then, using a range of techniques, help you change the way that you think and behave.
I am an Accredited Member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (membership number NCS22-03657) which is an organisation registered with the Professional Standards Authority. I am also an Approved Therapist with the charity Anxiety UK.
Here are my relevant qualifications:
Advanced Diploma in Integrative CBT/REBT Part l (Distinction)
Advanced Diploma in CBT/REBT
Diploma in CBT/REBT (Distinction)
Certificate in Counselling Skills
BA (Hons) in Social Science (including Psychology)
MA in Leadership and Change
Certificate in EMDR in Therapy and Coaching
I offer a range of techniques to help you effect the changes you want. My training and particular interest is focused on Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) which is a form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
REBT and CBT are borne from the philosophy that people are not disturbed by events but by the view they take of those events. In other words it is our beliefs about a situation rather than the situation itself that lead to us becoming stuck in unhealthy negative emotion such as anxiety, depression or anger.
I take clients through a process that helps them first to understand their unhealthy emotions, secondly to understand the irrational demands they are placing upon themselves and the beliefs that flow from those demands and then to help them change those beliefs by changing the way they think and behave.
The work is very much goal orientated. We work systematically through a problem, helping you to build resilience and unconditional self-acceptance.
If you have experienced trauma in your life that is proving to be a block to your recovery, my training in EMDR can help you process stuck memories and charged thoughts so you can move on more easily.
Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy helps people change their negative thoughts to improve how they feel and act. It's about turning unhealthy beliefs into positive ones. This method of therapy is effective in managing emotional distress and promoting personal growth.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy teaches people to identify and change unhelpful thoughts and actions. It's a practical approach to solve problems and feel better. Through this method, individuals learn coping strategies that have lasting positive effects on mental health.
Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing involves recalling distressing events while receiving bilateral sensory input, like side-to-side eye movements. This method helps individuals heal from trauma, extreme anxiety and phobias.
Wherever it is beneficial to do so, I will draw upon techniques from other therapy models.
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique using guided relaxation and focused attention to access a trance-like state, helping clients explore thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, reduce distress, and support positive change.
Emotional Freedom Technique is a self-help method combining gentle fingertip tapping on acupressure points with focused statements to reduce emotional distress, reframe thoughts, and promote a sense of calm.
Coaching is a useful way of developing skills and boosting performance or helping people make significant decisions in their work or their life more generally. The aim is to help people to deal with problems they are stuck on before they become major issues.
Counselling provides a supportive environment to discuss and explore feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. It helps individuals make positive changes in their lives.
This practice involves focusing the mind and being fully present in the moment. It's used to reduce stress, improve concentration, and promote overall well-being.
